The local areaAll the cottages are situated where Monksdale joins Millers Dale in the heart of the limestone area of the Peak District - an area noted for its beautiful dales and limestone uplands which give endless scope for exploring on foot, by bicycle or car. Monksdale is a national nature reserve particularly noted for its wildflowers and rugged scenery. Millers Dale offers delightful walks along the River Wye or on the bed of the former Midland Railway track where a good deal of industrial archaeology lends particular interest to your exploration. You could spend endless happy hours on foot without having to use the car at all. Further afield you will find the stunning Lathkill Dale and the Castleton area noted for its caves with stalactite formations and a Norman castle. There are many interesting local towns and villages to visit. Tideswell is nearby with its church, dubbed the Cathedral of the Peak, as well as a range of shops, sports facilities and the tradition of well dressing which it shares with many other peak district villages. Eyam, the famous plague village, is nearby and it is only a short drive to the market towns of Buxton and Bakewell. Buxton is noted for its Victorian and Edwardian architecture and boast the Opera House which hosts annual music festivals and a range of varied entertainments throughout the year. A range of stately homes offer a fascinating day out and of particular interest are Chatsworth House set in vast parklands and the delightful Haddon Hall which still gives the feeling of life in the past. Further afield can be found Hardwick Hall and there is a range of other places to visit including museums, art galleries and National Trust properties. Our small farm has footpaths through our conservation areas, past the badger setts and rabbit warrens to a ridge walk with dramatic views of seven dales. A few minutes drive and you will discover stately homes and gardens, spa towns, castles, caves and picturesque old villages. |
